I will always stand by my belief that, at least in the books, the Velaryon princes were all legitimate, and got their hair color from their grandmother (Rhaenys has black hair in the books, not silver/white) and very dark eyes. 

But, I also imagine each of them inheriting at least one physical trait from Laenor, something small that a lot of people don’t notice unless they look closely and knew Laenor well.

Jace has Laenor’s smile, and laughs just like his father. The color of Luke’s eyes is darker, but the shape is exactly the same as Laenor’s. Joff got his ears, and the shape of his eyebrows from his father.

Rhaenyra and Laenor may not have been in love but they loved each other so so so much and I wish we could have gotten to see more of it.

I wanted to see Rhaenyra holding Laenor as he sobs, eventually passing out from exhaustion in her arms after their wedding night. Show me them trying to convince their own children, because you know they did, and Laenor apologizing because he just can’t do it and Rhaenyra assures him it’s not his fault. Give me their conversation when Rhaenyra begins her relationship with Harwin and Laenor assures her that he will claim as his own any children she may bear regardless of who the father is. Let me see how happy and proud Rhaenyra is when Laenor is finally ready to move past Jeoffry’s death and start looking for love again. Like. They’re besties and they’re partners and they love each other so much and we deserved to see it.

Even if you do go with the idea that Harwin is the biological father of the Velaryon boys, it really bugs me how much the fandom seems to completely erase Laenor from their lives? Like, I don't know if I've seen a single piece of fanart that shows Laenor with his sons, while there's a million of Harwin and Jace and Luke being adorable together.

The way hotd creators went about making house velaryon Black was short sighted. Velaryons and Targaryans have a long history of marrying into each other's houses. Even aegon targ the conquerer's wife was velaryon. Yet none of the main cast of hotd look remotely biracial. This is against the backdrop of a family that pretty exclusively marries first degree relatives.

Rhaenyra's kids not looking like Laenor is such a problem that it becomes easy bait for fights between the cousins and direct accusations from the public, threatens the longevity of house velaryon's driftmark seat, and puts Rhaenyra in a number of political dilemmas. All based on the assumption that these kids are not velaryon bc they're white when in fact the whole cast should be racialized.

Overall, the show doesn't deal with the consequences of a Black cast well. That scene where vaemond demands the driftmark seat to preserve his bloodline could have been an interesting political battle for Rhaenyra. It demonstrated how widely believed the stories of her bastard children are. It also reves that vaemond is an opportunist bc the seat should go to laena's children baela and rhaena, a struggle Rhaenyra could advance to secure her own claim to the throne. These layers are murkied or sidelined by skin colour.

The worst part is this house is powerful in book hotd. Velaryons are on the level of Lannisters vs Starks in GOT bc of the battle power and political support they provide. This becomes especially apparent with (SPOILER) Rhaenyra's later decisions concerning Corlys.

Somebody on Tumblr said it best that hotd's decision to colour the Velaryons only caricatures diversity and they're right.

i love laenor's ending, i love his relationship with rhaeneyra and how he said he would be there for her and sacrifice who he is and her response was to set him free for good, because he wouldnt be truly there for them, bc it wouldnt be HIM, how could he love her and her kids if he would deny every bit and lack love for himself? nyra knew this... their relationship was never abt taking away, it was abt setting free, and the moment it wasnt, nyra knew what she had to do for him and for herself

Imagine if, instead of changing it to make it so that it comes across like Rhaenyra didn’t approve of Laenor naming their son after Joffrey Lonmouth, and only went with it because it was easier than putting up a fuss....When they’re asked what the baby will be named, Rhaenyra says that she wanted to let Laenor choose the name. And they give each other this look that shows that Rhaenyra knows what name Laenor will pick - the name he wanted to give to Jace and Luke but was denied. She gives him a nod and he says their son will be named Joffrey, looking at the baby and silently thanking Rhaenyra for giving him the gift of being able to honor his lost friend/lover, and dreaming about when Joffrey is a little older, and Laenor can tell him stories about the man he was named for.

For those who said that Rhaenyra and Laenor didn’t try to conceive a child.

There was no doubt in my mind they tried before they gave up. But I’m glad they add this scene to answer the question of whether they really tried or not.
